Dogs are intensely social animals. Without companionship, they become bored, lonely and destructive.

And there’s nothing more depressing than coming home from a long day at work and seeing your canine’s ecstatic face knowing that Fido has been waiting, waiting, waiting. Just anticipating the jingle of your keys as you unlock the front door.

Well, owner guilt can easily be a thing of the past. Because dogs have entered canine society in full force.

Lesbian entrepreneur April Prohaska dreamed about being a veterinarian, but her side-project Paws Pet Services, and in-home pet-care company took off. Big time.

Prohaska then set her dreams on a new project: an indoor-outdoor pet boutique that was all-inclusive: cafe, beer and wine bar, dog day care, retail, grooming and Internet access.

Now in its second year in business, Pooch Patio’s daycare the Dog Haus is a 2,000 square-foot lounge for tailwaggers. Pets can even sprawl out on arm chair Sunder ceiling fans. There’s also an outdoor space and an indoor, air-conditioned refuge. Owners can drop off their pet and grab a coffee before heading to work. When they pick up, they can order a beer or wine and hang out in the company of other dog lovers.

The drop-off/pick-up windows are: Mondays through Fridays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. And while at work, owners can check up on their dogs on a two different Web cams.

A happy pet is a healthy pet. Patrick Phelan who operates PetHomePal says he’s always had knack for detecting whether dogs are aggressive or fun loving. And when it comes to noticing bellicose felines, he even has a remedy: “Play harp music on a CD player. Play it continuously on low volume when you are gone for a long period of time. The music soothes and comforts the cat. It really works,”‘ Phelan says.

Before he began PetHomePal, Phelan spent 13 years working for the City of Dallas Parks & Recreation Department coordinating summer camps and after-school programs, and managing aquatic facilities.

On trips to New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, Phelan noticed that pet sitting was an ubiquitous business. So he took his work experience of human recreation and funneled it into animal recreation, mainly doggies.

He wants to guarantee his clients peace of mind when they’re out of town. He also wants to earn the loyalty of his clients’ animals. And sometimes he goes above and beyond the call of duty.

“Once, I was doing a house check in Lakewood over the Christmas holidays and found my client’s front yard completely covered in toilet paper. It was all in the trees and everywhere,” he remembers. “I sent a photo of the house via my phone to the client. And I knew it was going to rain that day. So I picked up all the toilet paper that I could reach. Later, I found out that the culprits got the address wrong and had “‘wrapped’ the wrong house.”
