New dyke to watch out for

Dallas Voice starts running of Paige Braddock's 'Jane's World'
It’s safe to say that Alison Bechdel’s kick-ass career is taking her in new directions. The beloved syndicated cartoonist of “Dykes to Watch Out For” wrote the graphic novel-memoir “Fun Home,” which was lavished with praise and became a finalist for a 2006 National Book Critics Award.
“Fun Home” took Bechdel seven years to write. And she recently announced that she’s temporarily halting the “Dykes” strip because she’s working on a new memoir that’s due next year.
As one cartoon door closes, another illustrated window opens. Enter Paige Braddock — creator of “Jane’s World.”
Last week, Dallas Voice ran its inaugural “Jane’s World” strip, where our wishy-washy newspaper reporting protagonist, Jane Wyatt, just broke up with Chelle, her “hot” former girlfriend, a former cop. The strip is set in Northern California, and other characters in Jane’s world include Ethan, her straight roomie; and Dorothy, Jane’s bisexual best friend from college.
Raised in rural Georgia, Braddock is a University of Tennessee grad who started working for “Peanuts” creator Charles M. Schulz in 1999 — the year before the master died. In the past eight years, she’s worked her way up to senior vice president at Schultz's Creative Associates, where she oversees the licensing of “Peanuts.”
While Peppermint Patty and Sally’s relationship has made gaydars ping for more than 50 years, “Jane’s World” is where Braddock really gets to unleash her same-sex creative skills: “girl-on-girl action, chicks with guns, a vegan menace, vintage Winnebagos and drag queens,” Braddock promises.
“Jane’s World” appears as an online comic and has been collected in a series of books. The latest, “Jane’s World Volume Eight,” (128 pp., $15), was published by Braddock’s own company, Girl Twirl.
To get familiar with Braddock’s work, on JaneComics.com, she keeps a blog: Last week, Braddock posted a barely sexy “Jane’s World” strip that was produced for Jane magazine but was deemed “too racy” for the demographic.
“Jane’s World” runs in Dallas Voice every other week — alternating with Kyle’s Bed & Breakfast by Greg Fox.

| THEY LOOK ALIKE: Jane Wyatt is a bespectacled tall figure with spiked blonde hair who’s comfortable in Converse tennis shoes — just like Braddock. |
