DFW Theater Critics Forum bestows annual awards

The Dallas-Fort Worth Theater Critics Forum gathered again this month to meet, argue and hash out which local theater productions it would single out for distinction, and the gay community was especially well-represented — not surprisingly; it is theater, after all.

Among those are Bruce R. Coleman for his direction of four shows and his costuming of another; Regan Adair and Cedric Neal for their acting seasons; Randel Wright for two of his set designs; and DTC artistic director Kevin Moriarty and Joel Farrell for their direction and choreography of “The Who’s Tommy,” the only production honored that is currently playing. Bill Bowers, a professional mime, starred in the only small-scale production awarded a touring citation, for his autobiographical one-man show about coming out, “It Goes without Saying.” Unusually, Uptown Players, normally a force in critics’ voting, failed to secure any wins.

The theater company with the most awards was Theatre Three, which took 11 over six shows — largely for the strong acting. The show with the single most awards was “The Who’s Tommy” with six. That’s a record number of awards for a single show from the forum.

In all, 38 productions from 18 presenters and companies were honored.
