| HOT AND SPICY: On Sunday, DJ Abel spins for 15 hours at Alegria: Xtreme. |
Going to NYC for the Black Party? DJ Abel releases 2-disc Alegria mix; kicks up Latin flava at Xtreme — the after-Black Party
The
first commandment of the Black Party — the kinky Manhattan circuit
party that celebrates the end of the winter solstice — is “Don’t talk
about the Black Party. Never blab to the media or non-members about
what you witness at Black Party.”
So of course, you’re dying to know. DJ Abel releases 2-disc Alegria mix; kicks up Latin flava at Xtreme — the after-Black PartyBut if you attend the Black Party, you always meet people who ask if you’re going to Alegria, which is the following night.
How
anyone has enough energy (or money!) to throw down at yet another
marathon of shirtless dancing and punishing disco remains a mystery.
But they do. In fact, most veterans say to skip the Black Party and
just hit Alegria: Xtreme.
Last month, DJ Abel released a taste of
what Xtreme is all about — “Alegria: Universo” (Tommy Boy), a two-disc
of 70-minute mixes. Able (birth name Abel Aguilera) has distilled the
17-hour party into disc 1, “Peak Hour,” and disc 2,“After Sunrise.” The
Brooklyn-born, Miami-raised Abel offers a spicy mix. His South
Beach-influenced flava is called “tropical tribal-Latino.” And Able’s
hot cha-cha sound compliments the Alegria vibe, which is like a
Brazilian Carnaval with elaborate sets that are designed, constructed
and imported from South America’s largest country. The first
commandment of the Black Party — the kinky Manhattan circuit party that
celebrates the end of the winter solstice — is “Don’t talk about the
Black Party. Never blab to the media or non-members about what you
witness at Black Party.”Earlier this week, we caught up with Able to dish on Xtreme.
Have
you ever spun in Dallas? Yes— a few times, including the Purple Party
with my remix partner, Ralphi Rosario a couple years ago. It was fun,
and the chickens were hot.So of course, you’re dying to know. The Black
Party’s “kinky-filthy” reputation is legendary for its ties to S/M
culture. What’s the flavor of Alegria Xtreme? Being sexy and hard
dancing. This year it’s gonna be even sexier! But I can't give it away.
What goes on at Xtreme that you can’t experience any anywhere else?
The hottest bodies you have ever seen together in one dam place!
This
year’s Xtreme will also be a birthday celebration for you. Here’s a
b-day wish: If you had an unlimited budget and superpowers, what would
you do differently on the “Universo” CD if you could re-cut it? I
would do a box set of the entire 15-hour journey so everyone can take
memories home. That would take around, 15 CDs.But if you attend the Black Party, you always meet people who ask if you’re going to Alegria, which is the following night.SOPHIE’S
CHOICE: An adventurous Dallas boy finds a cheap air ticket to NYC this
weekend, but he only has enough money to attend either the Black Party
or Alegria Xtreme. Which one should he choose? Take the Greyhound, (a
little cheaper than a plane). And with the money you saved, go to both
— two parties, two energies, two experiences. Let him be the judge!
Alegria Xtreme 8, March 30 at 11 p.m. Webster Hall, 125 East 11th Street, New York. $70. Ticketmaster.com
