Maybe
we’re in a post-“Brokeback” age, because there are plenty of gay-made,
gay-interest titles for film-festivals to choose from. In North Texas,
Fort Worth’s Q Cinema and OUT TAKES Dallas both have 10-day schedules
to fill with programs. While they’re trying to lure queer ticket-buyers
with juicy previews, the festivals also help showcase local talent.
During its closing weekend, Q Cinema has three titles with ties to DFW.
During
Saturday afternoon’s “Our Shorts are Showing 2,” “Daddy’s Big Girl” is
a 17-minute short co-written by Christopher Bradley, a Texas Christian
University alum. Sassy and slightly sleazy, this heartwarming
featurette is about a plump daughter who tries to reconcile with her
pretentious gay dad. Millie (Rakefet Abergel) is cranky and overweight.
Her father is a shallow movie executive who hires male strippers when
he’s not promising movie roles to studly young actors. Bradley also
stars in the movie — he plays the gay dad.
Another short in the
same program is Dallas filmmaker Robert L. Camina’s “Drip Tease.”
Camina had originally produced the film for the Video Association of
Dallas’ 24-Hour Video race, but a computer glitch stalled editing, and
Camina missed the deadline. The funny “mistaken identity” film lives
on. It’s probably the best screen performance ever given by Richard
Curtin (aka Edna Jean Robinson).
On Saturday night, “Mulligans”
closes the fest. Written by University of North Texas grad Chip Hale,
the drama is about a son who invites his college buddy home for the
summer holiday, and then Mom busts Dad in an “unspeakable” affair.
“Our
Shorts are Showing 2,” June 7 at 3 p.m. $8. “Mulligans,” June 7 at 7:30
p.m. $15. Screenings at Rose Marine Theatre, 1440 N. Main St. Fort
Worth. 817-462-3368.
