An employee who answered the phone at Bally Total Fitness on McKinney Avenue in Turtle Creek confirmed this morning that the gym is closing for good on June 26. The employee said he was unsure why the gym is closing, and he referred additional questions to corporate, where I’ve left a message. The closure may have something to do with Chicago-based Bally’s two recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings, as well as the fact that gym memberships are way down due to the economy. Either way, I’m sure this guy is pleased.
“James O.” of Dallas said in an e-mail this morning that members of the gym were greeted with signs and posters announcing the closure due to an “end of lease” despite an announcement last year that Bally had secured a new 10-year lease at 3232 McKinney Ave., Suite 400. James O. said members are being offered an upgraded national membership, but he added, “Certainly the other local locations won’t work for all of the affected members so we’ll soon be having to sign up elsewhere. In the mean time, the club is cutting back its hours and closing on weeknights at 8 p.m. instead of the usual 11 p.m.”
