As I reported last week, the Bally Total Fitness on McKinney Avenue in the Turtle Creek area will be closing at the end of this week, which apparently comes as a disappointment to many who read this blog. Larry Larsen, a spokesman for Bally Total Fitness, told me this morning that the location is closing as part of the company’s reorganization under a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Larsen said the Turtle Creek location is one of six Bally clubs in Dallas that will be closing as part of the reorganization, and one of 26 nationwide. After the reorganization, the company will have eight clubs remaining in Dallas and 300 remaining nationwide. Larsen explained that as part of the reorganization, the company attempted to renegotiate all of its leases, and Bally is closing gyms in locations where it was unsuccessful. Bally is offering members of closed gyms “upgrades” to a national membership, which allows them to visit any Bally location and is a $250 annual value, Larsen said. The nearest Bally location to Turtle Creek is Bachman Lake, about 6 miles away. Larsen added that depending on the terms of their memberships, most people should also be able to cancel altogether by calling (800)515-2582.
