Our old friend, Bishop T.D. Jakes of the Potters House megachurch in Dallas, attended a meeting Tuesday in Chicago between Barack Obama and Christian leaders, according to this story from The Associated Press. Jakes, who doesn’t endorse candidates, told AP after the meeting that “some participants clearly have political differences with Obama.” The AP reported that those differences include “abortion rights and gay rights.” Jakes himself has been criticized by conservative Christians for a commentary last week on CNN.com saying how proud he was that Obama had become the first black presidential nominee from a major party.
Many Hillary Clinton supporters in Dallas and elsewhere have expressed fears that Obama will throw the LGBT community under the bus to satisfy his supporters in the socially conservative black church. Is Tuesday’s meeting an indication that those fears are on their way to being realized?
