Yesterday, I slammed The Dallas Morning News for failing to print anything about the impact of the gay vote in the weeks leading up to Texas’ presidential primary last month. Today, I commend the newspaper for picking up this topic from Dallas Voice and publishing a story about the effort to fire Collin County Teen Court coordinator Justin Nichols because he’s gay.
Granted, this decision was something of a no-brainer, and one might ask what took The DMN so long and why it needed two reporters to cover the story. Still, I’m glad the newspaper recognizes the significance of the subject. For one, Collin County and other suburban areas represent the new frontier in gay rights for North Texas. Let’s face it, the battle in Dallas has largely been won.
