I’ve reported repeatedly in recent weeks that there are no openly LGBT candidates running for Dallas City Council this year. So you can imagine my surprise last night when District 1 candidate Daniel J. Benchot (shown above) stood up during a forum at the Cathedral of Hope and declared that he’s gay.
Benchot, a 42-year-old Dallas native, acknowledged that until now, he hasn’t reallly been running as an openly gay candidate. But he vowed that if elected, he’d serve as an advocate for the LGBT community.
While Distict 1 isn’t heavily gay, for the last six years it has had a very LGBT-supportive council member in the form of Elba Garcia, who’s stepping down due to term limits. Benchot was one of four candidates to replace Garcia who attended last night’s forum sponsored by the Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance. For more on the candidate forum and Dallas City Council races, see Friday’s Dallas Voice. And remember, the deadline to register to vote in May 9 municipal elections is Thursday, April 9.
