The Fort Worth Opera continues its unexpected but kinda cool dedication to performing gay operas — of which there are virtually none.
Still, that didn’t stop gay general director Darren Woods from choosing “Angels in America” to launch the 2008 season last spring. He also tapped gay composer Jake Heggie’s “Dead Man Walking” for next season. That’s two operas adapted from plays or movies… and in 2010 comes a third.
Jorge Martin’s (pictured) opera “Before Night Falls” tells the story of gay expatriate Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas, who died of AIDS-related suicide in 1990. Arenas’ story was made into an Oscar-nominated film in 2000 with Javier Bardem. The opera workshopped “Before Night Falls” this summer.
