While it is admiral that Mr. White is at least friendly to our cause, I am concerned about a few of his answers.
"Gov. Rick Perry is ignoring the real issues facing Texas to focus on things like passing the state’s 2005 constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage"
-Yes, our poor education system, poor health care system and the threat of economic collapse are all real and very important issues to Texans, but thousands of LGBT people living as second class citizens in our state was as much an issue in 2005 as it is today.
**Asked whether White will release a policy statement on LGBT issues similar to Shami’s and Gilbert’s, campaign spokeswoman Katy Bacon said he’s “not one to just pick up someone else’s agenda.” Bacon added that she expects White to issue his own policy statement on LGBT issues in coming weeks.
“I wish I could give you a timeline, but I don’t want to give you a timeline and have it change,” Bacon said. **
So, the Stonewall Democrats have endorsed a candidate without a formal policy statement of his stance on LGBT issues and can't even tell us when we could expect such a report??? They have given their stamp of approval to someone who has not gone on record as supporting our full civil equality?
It sends me in to a fit of rage when I think of how utterly spineless our community is when it comes to endorsing political candidates. WE HAVE REAL POWER IN OUR ENDORSEMENT! If we didn't, rest assured these candidates would not even seek us out. They know the value of the LGBT Community. They know many of us are ready to send thousands of dollars their way in exchange for real representation in our government. Yet we allow them to take our money, our stamp of approval (and with them our dignity)- all while offering us piecemeal equality and tiny political pacifiers.
Where is your backbone Stonewall?? How much longer will you allow politicians to only "kinda" support our community and walk away with your coveted endorsement?
Politicians seeking our votes should be expected to support FULL equality for all people. NOT "civil unions" in place of marriage. NOT "maybe". NOT "someday". Like I said before.. we have POWER in our endorsement, but even MORE in our ability to say "thanks but no thanks".
WAKE THE F' UP!
