Gay Globetrotting

LOVE IS IN THE AIR: Does this mean Southwest will start to woo gay globetrotters away from American?

One of the more interesting Readers Voice voting categories for 2007 was Best Local Airport. And at the Dallas Voice offices, the results raised many eyebrows especially in the advertising department.

Since Love Field is no longer governed by the Wright amendment which limited intrastate commercial traffic into and out of the airport it looks like North Texas GLBT travelers enjoy having more options.

Caught in the middle of the Love Field vs. D-FW debate is Oak Lawn, which sits directly below Love’s flight path. Dallas’ biggest gayborhood stands to be impacted the most by the changes at Love.

Already, some Oak Lawners are complaining about the noise of the jets and the ever-busy runways.

And then there’s the other tug-of-war: Southwest vs. American Airlines.

American, whose home base is D-FW, is arguably one of the gay community’s friendliest companies.

Not that gay people aren’t loyal when it comes to name brands, but it seems that Southwest’s 14 active gates at Love are quite appealing to queer globetrotters.

The question for the future: Will Southwest begin targeting the gay consumer?

Oh, wouldn’t that be something? Like Beyonce vs. J. Hud dueling divas fighting over their gay fan base.

Oh, the gay subculture attached to Assassination City: Clay Shaw, David Ferrie and and rough-trade hookers like Willie O’Keefe.

And there’s another one: Jack Ruby and Lee Harvey Oswald were Yep, rumored to be “bed partners.” That’s what Ruby-connected prostitute Rose Cheramie told police before she was suspiciously killed.

Formerly run by gay executive director Jeff West, the Sixth Floor Museum is a must for all Dallasites. And repeat visits are worth every penny of the admission price. The study of the assassination of J.F.K and how that it affected the world is fabulous and endlessly fascinating.

Thank God the city of Dallas didn’t bury its head in the sand of the Grassy Knoll. Instead, we’re shining a light on an ugly incident and examining the history of the sniper’s nest and it’s impact on our future.
