It's sad that your readers are denied finding out how it was to be a pioneer, in gay politics and sports. SHAME ON YOU... One thing the film unfortunately fails to mention, because it would have given nongay audience members something to relate to, was his Navy service, as noted above. While he was, of course, no longer the former Goldwater Republican by 1978, he remained proud of those years to the very end.
