High-speed chase in Oak Lawn

Just got the following press release from DPD. I’m sure most of us have driven through this intersection a few times. The deceased driver has been identified as 50-year-old Clay Curnett, a white male. The suspect, who’s still in the hospital, has been identified as 42-year-old Eric Austin. Austin is charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Last night at around 9:40pm a Dallas patrol officer attempted to make a traffic stop on a white Ford Explorer that was traveling at a high rate of speed and driving erratically near the intersection of Inwood Road and Maple Ave. The officer, who was in an unmarked traffic enforcement car, turned on his emergency lights only to have the suspect turn North on Maple Ave and attempt to evade the officer at a high rate of speed. The officer, following the current chase policy, disengaged in the traffic stop and notified the dispatcher of his situation. The suspect continued at a high rate of speed North on Maple Ave until he collided with several vehicles in the intersection of Maple Ave. and Mockingbird Ln. The first vehicle that the suspect hit was driven by an adult male who was pronounced deceased at the scene. The second vehicle driver, who was also an adult male, as well as the suspect himself, were taken to Parkland Hospital in good condition. There is dash cam video of the original attempt to stop the suspect vehicle, however the suspect fled at such a high rate of speed there is very little after that.
