Houston Log Cabin Republicans leader steps down to support Obama

Noel Freeman, president of Houston’s Log Cabin Republicans chapter, is defecting from the organization and the party to support Barack Obama for president.

However, based on our letters to the editor last week, this may not be the type of support Obama wants. In fact, just by posting this on Instant Tea we may run the risk of having our paper booted from at least one local business (see the letters).

Anyhow, Freeman (pictured above) says the breaking point was when he ran for the Houston City Council last year, and the Harris County Republican Party refused to put him on its Web site because he’s openly gay.

“The gay and lesbian community has been used as a political football for the last eight years,” said Freeman, “If you look at the Texas Republican Party Platform, it’s been openly hostile to the GLBT community.”
