Going after the gay vote

February 29th, 2008

Some of you may be wondering why there’s an interview with Hillary Clinton on the front page of today’s print edition, but nothing from Barack Obama. The short answer is that Hillary took the time to do a conference call with Dallas Voice and a couple other gay newspapers on Wednesday, Feb. 27, while Obama didn’t respond to repeated requests for an interview.

I can’t begrudge Obama for that. Obviously he’s got to decide what his priorities are in the final days of the campaign, and he can’t do an interview with every reporter who requests it.

Obama’s camp took out a full-page ad in Dallas Voice and other gay papers this week, and he penned an open letter to the LGBT community on Thursday, Feb. 28. Strangely, though, no one here at Dallas Voice got a copy of the letter or we would have printed it.

In retrospect, not making sure we got the letter was a pretty big booboo on the part of the Obama camp. Dallas Voice is the only legitimate gay newspaper in the state, which ultimately may decide the nomination. Oopsy-daisy!!!
