DMN: Everything hunky-dory in UMC
April 23rd, 2008I love how The DMN tries to make a non-issue out of the gay issue in today’s article about the now-under-way UMC General Conference in Fort Worth. According to the article by Sam Hodges, the Methodists are just one big happy family that likes to sing “Blest Be The Tie That Binds” together.

OH Mz Wright,
Did you read the article, or just the headline?
It was pretty thorough, I thought…
My take on the article was: Methodists are deeply torn over the gay issue, but don’t want the denomination to unravel like the Episcopalians…. basically they’ll agree to disagree for the sake of keeping the denomination in tact for now.
Did I miss something?
Luv U,
Mz B

Apparently, Mr. Wright and Mr. Kusner graduated from the same school of thought. The Society of Professional Journalists’ code of ethics stresses the importance of fairness, accuracy, diversity, truth and balance in reporting, all of which are clearly present in Sam Hodges’ article. Unlike Dallas Voice, The Dallas Morning News strives to provide news and feature reporting that is non-ideological, seeking out intelligent, articulate views from all perspectives when covering controversial issues. In this case, Mr. Hodges placed the issue in context, laying out each side’s argument and facts to support it. He presented the views of legitimate spokespeople of the conflicting sides of the dispute, providing both sides with equal attention. Rather than make a “non-issue out of the gay issue,” Mr. Hodges simply did what most respectable journalists would do — he remained neutral. Contrary to Mr. Wright’s assertion that Mr. Hodges portrayed the Methodists as “one big happy family,” the article clearly reveals a denomination that is determined to remain unified precisely because it has seen the painful divisiveness brought on by controversies within the Episcopal Church.

Mz Garinn,
Girl, that is a bit harsh now…
If you want to go after somebody, go after that nut case Julie Lyons, aka Bible Girl, over at The Dallas Observer… SHE IS WRONG!
These girls at The Voice are far from perfect, but they’re doing way better than most gay papers around the country. Have you read the gay papers in other big cities lately… they ain’t all that…
You girls need to remember we are all on the same team, aren’t we?

Mz B, we are simpatico about Julie Lyons. There’s entirely too much testosterone at Dallas Observer. But Kia, I must disagree with your assessment. I don’t hate Dallas Voice. I just want it to be less of a trashy tabloid and more of a legitimate newspaper. That doesn’t mean it can’t be fun — but it needn’t be offensive. Dallas Voice bills itself as “The Community Newspaper for Gay & Lesbian Dallas.” I’m part of that community, so I expect to have a voice in how the newspaper serves — and represents — our community.

ur take on a community is different than mine jonny. if everyone talked the way you typed there would be no broomsticks left at the Home Depot cuz theyd be up our collective asses.
