Garinn moonlighting at gay-hating church?
April 23rd, 2008Given that he’s the self-anointed king of ethics, and such a proud member of the LGBT community, surely Jon Garinn has an explanation for the fact that he’s written “custom publications” for First Baptist Dallas. Says so right here on his Web site.

It’s all coming together for me now. I thought we were cool Garrin. Kia has no love for First Baptist employees. This relationship is now over. You can come pick up your things.

OH NO SHE DIDN’T!
Mz Wright gets the prize for her investigative skills!
Oh Mz Garinn,
you have some serious explaining to do…
you might as well be Julie Lyons’ publicist!!!!

I was fully aware of the church’s history when I received the assignment. The purpose of the section was to celebrate the opening of the Criswell Center, named in honor of the Rev. Dr. W.A. Criswell, who was widely known for his anti-gay theology. I knew that, as editor, I would have the unique opportunity to tailor the church’s message to ensure that it was balanced.

Oh snap ladies! This story be poppin’ ! You know I barely escaped the First Baptist myself. God speed Mr. Garrin! And by sped, I mean get the F out while you can!

Jon - your tailored advertorial bull-schtick is wearing thin in my book. Basically your’e a walking conflict of interest with a huge….dictionary.
Get over yourself and realize that you are not the voice of our community, hence the reason you don’t work in a true editorial format. Isn’t there a blender that needs a spotlight in your next special section?

I make no apologies for the work I do. I make it very clear that I am an advertising writer and editor. It’s my job to work closely with our clients and advertisers to communicate their message to their target audience. In the case of First Baptis Dallas, the objective was to invite our readers to the opening of the Criswell Center and to iinform them about the various ministries of the church. It was not to present an anti-gay message. The client made it clear that the church was not publishing the section in an attempt to proselytize or to attract new members. Rather, the church wanted to communicate that the completion of its new building was a sign that the church was committed to remaining a vital part of downtown Dallas, and to developing ministries that would benefit members and nonmembers alike. That First Baptist Dallas is associated with the theology of its late pastor is understandable. Dr. Criswell earned an international reputation as a preacher and champion of biblical inerrancy while building the church into the world’s pre-eminent Southern Baptist congregation.
But Dr. Criswell died in 2002. The death of his wife Betty shortly before the section published in 2006 ensured that the Criswell era had effectively ended. The client made it clear that the section was intended to signal the beginning of a new era at the church. Hence, I had no conflict of interest.
I don’t pretend to speak as “the voice of our community,” nor have I anointed myself the “king of ethics.” I’ve simply tried to make the point that Dallas Voice doesn’t do our community any favor by sensationalizing the news to support its ideology.

Sounds to me like a lot of rhetoric Mr. Garrin, “change you can xerox” Anyone?

While it is true that Mz Garinn certainly provoked the Voice and was not wise in the language she used to criticize the paper….. it is also true that….
Whatever you do…
don’t criticize or piss off the Voice,
cause if you do…. they will use their bully pulpit to attack and embarrass you…
very unprofessional, and I doubt Dennis Vercher would have ever pulled a stunt like that…..

Oh Mz Kia,
Girl, I am a Gemini…. I change my mind all the time….
I love the Voice… I think it is one of the best gay papers in the country…
Robert Moore is a great guy who has done so much for our community…
and the staff is one of the best in the country…
but that doesn’t mean they don’t need to be called out on their shit from time to time…
Mz Wright is a great reporter who does really good work…
but she’s got better things to do than embarrass some queen who is full of herself…
The Voice is a great paper, and will continue to stay that way, as long as its readers call them out when they are wrong….
