The Pattaya Mail in Thailand reports that the Thai military has given notice to the country’s transvestites that they must put the heels back in the closet, wash off the makeup and pass a masculinity test within 30 days of registering for the draft if they want to be considered for “becoming trained killers” or they will be rejected. Rejection from military service can create employment problems in civilian life. Some are protesting saying they could serve openly in meaningful roles such as nurses.

‘Top Chef’ goes straight

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Just two weeks after her girlfriend Zoe was asked to “pack your knives and go,” lesbian cook and “Top Chef” contestant Jen was booted from the series. Zoe and Jen were the first-ever couple of any sex to compete on the popular Bravo reality series, which last season saw Shinsei executive chef Casey Thompson in the final three.

Jen’s departure means there are no more GLBT chefs on the series… or are there? We have our suspicions about some of those guys. But we have no interest in claiming Andrew (below), a tweaker who acts so much like an amphetamine popper that I would rather not trust him to even season my soup.

Day of Silence proclamation

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert signed a proclamation this week declaring Friday as the Day of Silence.

People, particularly students, all over the country already had plans to observe the National Day of Silence on Friday. It is an annual event, organized around the country by the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network and intended to shine a spotlight on the issue of anti-gay harassment, bullying and violence in schools.

This year, the Day of Silence is dedicated to Lawrence King, the 15-year-old gay boy murdered by a classmate in February because the classmate was offended that Lawrence had flirted with him.

Mayor Leppert’s proclamation notes that more than 80 percent of LGBT students report being verbally harassed over their sexual orientation or gender identity; nearly 40 percent were physically harassed and nearly 20 percent were physically assaulted.

The proclamation points out that 40 of our 52 United States DO NOT have laws specifically protecting LGBT students (and yes, Texas is among those 40), and it declares that “every child should be guaranteed an education free from name-calling, bullying, harassment, and discrimination regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.”

Truth is, signing that proclamation was really just a symbolic act that has no really tangible impact. But it’s also true that the intangible impact could be significant indeed. And I think Mayor Leppert deserves a round of applause for being willing to sign it, especially in a town where conservatives — the kind who don’t want to see anything gay-positive happening — still hold a lot of political clout.

You go Mayor! And thanks.

Garinn moonlighting at gay-hating church?

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Given that he’s the self-anointed king of ethics, and such a proud member of the LGBT community, surely Jon Garinn has an explanation for the fact that he’s written “custom publications” for First Baptist Dallas. Says so right here on his Web site.

DMN: Everything hunky-dory in UMC

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

I love how The DMN tries to make a non-issue out of the gay issue in today’s article about the now-under-way UMC General Conference in Fort Worth. According to the article by Sam Hodges, the Methodists are just one big happy family that likes to sing “Blest Be The Tie That Binds” together.

In Friday’s edition of Dallas Voice, look for an interview with Arlington-raised, UNT graduate Mason Wyler, a busy porn stud who recently moved to Dallas where he now lives with his boyfriend. Tonight, Wyler is having his first local meet-and-greet at Rush. He’ll be signing autographs, giving out signed copies of his adult films and judging an amateur strip contest.
“I felt it was about time I did a promotion event in my hometown. Y’all should come,” he told Dallas Voice.
Wyler’s boyfriend works the door at Rush..

Well, it looks like Star and Al Reynolds won’t be moving to Dallas anymore. When I interviewed Star — and got all up in her and Al’s personal history — she hung up.

According to a press release Star sent to Entertainment Tonight, they’re dunzo. She filed for divorce a month ago.

George and Kenny do London with Geri and her new beau

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

George Michael and Geri Halliwell enjoyed a double date with their respective lovers on Monday night, April, 21. The Spice Girl and backing dancer Ivan ‘Flipz’ Velez joined the ‘Careless Whisper’ singer and his long-term partner Kenny Goss at the exclusive London restaurant San Carlo. An onlooker said: “Both couples seemed to be getting on well and Geri looks smitten with Ivan. During the dinner, Geri was kissing her boyfriend and doing a dance which entertained fellow diners.”
Earlier in the day, Geri and Flipz — who met during the Spice Girls’ recent reunion tour — had enjoyed a romantic bike ride around Hampstead Heath. Geri, 35, is said to be besotted with Flipz and is keen to have a baby with him. A source close to Geri — who already has a 23-month-old daughter Bluebell from a previous relationship —said: “Geri is keen for a sibling for Bluebell and last year she vowed to find the right man one way or another. Flipz is great with Bluebell. Geri can see how Flipz would fit easily into her family.”
By the way, Goss is Bluebell’s godfather. Who’s Blubell’s godmama? Posh Spice.

Hey y’all, meet fierce, hot-mess Kia

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

kia.jpgDallas Voice staffers have been curious about our favorite new blog commentator, Kia. So we asked her to tell us a lil’ bit about herself.

Instead, Kia sent a self-portrait. And she’s one tickety-tack hot mess.
