Yearbook shenanigans

Monday, May 19th, 2008

It’s not that unusual to find stories from somewhere in Texas under the “Odd News” heading on my Yahoo page. But this one caught my attention because it had a McKinney dateline, and I like to keep track of oddness happening that close to home.

It seems that a company called Lifetouch National School Studios Inc. is having to reprint all the 2007-2008 yearbooks for McKinney High School because some Lifetouch employee apparently got a little creative with the Photoshop.

The school had required that the yearbook company make all the heads the same size and all the eyes at the same level in the all the student photos — which the yearbook company rep said was an unusual request. But an unnamed employee suffered “an unfortunate lapse in judgment” and switched some heads onto different bodies, stretched some necks and even put one girl’s head and face on a naked body (the chest area was blurred out).

I wonder, did the guy — or girl — who made the alterations really think no one would notice?! Hell, I graduated from high school 30 years ago. But even I can remember how carefully we looked at each and every photo in the yearbook when it came out.

The spokesperson from Lifetouch wouldn’t say whether the responsible employee had been fired or reprimanded or whatever. But if it were my decision, I would make the chump stay there and work long enough to repay the cost of having all those yearbooks reprinted.

Duh, what California marriage ruling?

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Over on DVtv, Ben Briscoe hit the Cedar Springs strip last night for this segment on local reaction to the California Supreme Court decision striking down a ban on same-sex marriage. Briscoe did an excellent job, especially considering that he obviously had to explain to some of the folks what he was talking about. It reminded me of this recent poll showing that, basically, many gays simply don’t have a clue about their rights — or lack thereof. It also reminded me of the story a local gay activist once told me: After the Supreme Court struck down Texas’ sodomy statute in 2003, she said she went to the bar to celebrate. The only problem was, nobody there even knew what had happened.

Oh well, I guess “ignorance is bliss.” Now I think I’ll head over to happy hour.

The tasteful robber

Friday, May 16th, 2008

WDSU.com, the Web page for a New Orleans TV station, has a story online now about a man in drag robbing a Burger King.

Apparently, the suspect pulled up in a pickup truck, got out, climbed through the drive-thru window waving a gun, demanded money, climbed back out the same window and drove off.

He was described as wearing “a dress with a revealing bust line and hair barrettes.”

The story quotes “WDSU crime and safety specialist Howard Robertson” who claimed the suspect is most likely “a genuine cross-dresser,” instead of just some crafty crook who threw on a bad wig to try and disguise himself, because this guy had it all put together well: “His necklace matched the dress, his nails appeared to be painted and the wig was well made.”

Another reason to celebrate Thursday’s ruling: It pissed Cornyn off

Friday, May 16th, 2008

cornyn.jpg

Texas Sen. John Cornyn is none too happy about Thursday’s ruling by the California Supreme Court striking down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage. In Cornyn’s view, the ruling means it’s time to start talking again about amending the U.S. Constitution to ban gay marriage. Cornyn said the fact that gay marriage was isolated to just Massachusetts was used as an argument against a proposed federal amendment in 2006.

Then again, maybe Cornyn is just nervous that his Democratic challenger in this year’s election, Rick Noriega, is polling within just a few percentage points of him. Cornyn may think this is a perfect opportunity to fire up his right-wing supporters, and who better to give him the opportunity than The Dallas Morning News? Did The DMN bother contacting Noriega to see what he thinks about the ruling? Stupid question.

Here’s a better question: When is the Human Rights Campaign going to endorse Noriega? I understand HRC doesn’t want to waste its members’ money on losing candidates, but I think it’s fair to say Noriega has a reasonable shot at winning, and Cornyn is about as anti-gay as they come. Plus, Noriega currently has a huge fundraising disadvantage.

Yesterday, while Ellen DeGeneres taped her show, she apparently announced that she and Portia de Rossi plan to tie the knot. The episode is supposed to air today, Friday.

Will she discuss their pre-nup?

What will that hyphentated last name look like? DeGeneres-de Rossi?

Fort Worth puts spotlight on AIDS

Friday, May 16th, 2008

In the paper this week, I preview the Fort Worth Opera’s production of “Angels in America,” which opens tonight. But the opera isn’t the only effort Cowtown is making toward drawing attention to the AIDS crisis.

The citywide festival More Life: The Art and Science of AIDS shines a spotlight on the disease through June 8. AIDS Outreach Center, Samaritan House and Tarrant County AIDS Interfaith Network join the FWO and other arts organizations in presenting shows, exhibits and meetings.

Among the events:

• Stage West and Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth team up for a dance/theater collaboration, “Conjuring Light Quilting Life,” choreographed by gay Dallas terpsichorean Loris Beckles. It opens at the Sanders Theatre inside the Fort Worth Community Center tonight (alongside “Angels”). Other performances are May 17 and May 24 3 and 8 p.m., and May 23 at 8 p.m.

• Amphibian Stage Productions presents a staged reading of “Lonely Planet” at the Scott Theatre on May 29 and 30 at 8 p.m.

• “The Faces of AIDS,” a traveling art exhibit, will be at the Community Center through May 31.

• There will be a town hall meeting May 21 to discuss AIDS.

Willie Campbell, a 42-year-old man living with HIV, will have to serve half of a 35-year prison sentence before he’s eligible for parole. In 2006, Campbell was busted for public intoxication. While resisting arrest, he began kicking the inside of Dallas policeman Dan Waller’s squad car. He also spit in the officer’s eyes and mouth.
