And breaking the tape first is… Tyson Queerboy!

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Tyson Gay, America’s top sprinter and certain to be in the running for an Olympic gold in Beijing in a few weeks, doesn’t get the credit he deserves — literally. The American Family Association’s news feed about Gay (that’s his last name, not his orientation) “corrects” his credit by… well, you’ll just have to read it here.

DMN takes bold stand against firing people for being gay

Monday, June 30th, 2008

What’s next, an editorial condemning child abuse?

The DMN really went out on a limb Saturday with this editorial saying it was wrong for Collin County to force Teen Court coordinator Justin Nichols to resign for being gay. Oh well, I guess we should just be glad The DMN didn’t give Rod Dreher or Kelly Shackleford another soapbox from which to rant against gay marriage this week.

Anyhow, I did want to point something out about The DMN’s coverage of the Nichols situation. Perhaps I’m guilty of being overly defensive here, but it seems to me that The DMN’s stories and now this editorial have on some level implied that Dallas Voice outed Nichols, which is simply not true. A standard line from The DMN’s stories about Nichols has been:

“The controversy began in March after the Dallas Voice, a weekly gay and lesbian newspaper, ran a story about Mr. Nichols’ city council candidacy that mentioned his sexual orientation.”

While technically accurate, that sentence is misleading, and the following line from Sunday’s editorial is even worse:

“A gay newspaper made it public that Mr. Nichols was gay during his unsuccessful campaign for Plano City Council this year.”

Nichols has been out since he was 16, and he sought and received an endorsement from the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, which only endorses gay candidates, prior to the Voice’s story about him in March. What’s more, Nichols consented to be interview — and openly discuss his sexual orientation — for our initial story about his candidacy. Dallas Voice has strict policies about outing people, and I’m confident we’re on solid ethical ground here. As for The DMN, well, not so much.

Kia says Branch looks like ‘real Daddy,’ which may explain LCR invite

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Beloved Instant Tea-bagger “Kia” sent me a note on Friday asking about the upcoming Log Cabin Republicans meeting featuring state Rep. Dan Branch (pictured above). According to Kia, Branch looks like “a real Daddy,” and she wants to see him in person. Kia pointed out that in my story for Friday’s Voice about the controversy involving Branch’s appearance, I didn’t include details of the meeting, so here they are: LCR’s regular monthly meeting will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 28, at Mattito’s Restaurant, 3011 Routh St. in Dallas. You can RSVP for the meeting by going to the Log Cabin Web site here. (Note that the date of the meeting is wrong on the main page but correct on the invite page.)

HIV testing day

Friday, June 27th, 2008

testing-day-web.gif

I just got back from being tested at the Resource Center of Dallas. By 1 p.m. they had more than 125 people show up for a free exam, almost as many as all day last year. Bret Camp, Associate Executive Director of Health and Medical Services, told me about five percent of the tests are coming back positive. That’s right around the same number as last year.

They are open until 9 p.m., so make sure to get up there and get tested!

Defending marriage

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Rex Wockner just passed along this little tidbit:

Apparently Republican Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho — he of the “toe-tapping in the airport bathroom” fame — and Republican Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana — who admitted to an extra-marital affair — have both signed on as co-sponsors of the federal amendment to ban gay marriage.

Wow. With friends like these, a marriage amendment doesn’t need enemies!

You can’t say that Dallas Voice didn’t dedicate enough coverage to the summer’s queer Lolapalooza, ‘True Colors: ’08′. Preview interviews with Cyndi and Carson, Arnold Wayne Jones’ review and DVTV on-the-spot video feature from Gus Klein.

Here are some more of Voice photog Bryan Amann’s images from the show. Enjoy. (more…)

Does Oak Lawn need an official cocktail?

Friday, June 27th, 2008

a_colt_one.jpg

Louisiana recently recognized the Sazerac — a mix of rye whiskey, bitters, absinthe and lemon — as the official cocktail of the City of New Orleans. Hearing this got me thinking: What makes a particular drink the beverage of an area? (Notably not the official drink of the Big Easy: The hurricane.)

So I’m gonna put it out there: What would be the ideal cocktail for Oak Lawn/Cedar Springs/Uptown? It can be preexisting or you can make it up. What about it? What cocktail identifies us best?

Tomorrow — Saturday, June 28, 2008 — is the 39th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York, the reason we celebrate Gay Pride Month in June.

Here are a couple of clips I found on YouTube. Watch and educate yourself.
