Totally unscientific poll shows majority of Texans support same-sex marriage
June 2nd, 2008Last week we ran a story about a poll showing that a majority of California voters support same-sex marriage. Well I just noticed that The Houston Chronicle, which seems to do a better job than our daily paper of covering gay issues, is conducting an online poll about the subject. Granted, online polls aren’t scientific, and it’s probably been influenced by blog posts like this, but the results thus far still seem a little surprising for Texas.
Fifty-two percent of respondents say Texas should permit same-sex marriages and recognize commitments from other states, 11 percent say Texas should permit civil unions but not same-sex marriages, 22 percent say the law should remain the same (no same-sex marrages), and 12 percent say we should return to the days when homosexual conduct was a crime. Another 1 percent say something that I can’t quite make out on my browser, but maybe yours will work better. If you’d like to vote and/or see the results for yourself, go here.

Once again, Mr. Wright takes a cheap shot at The Dallas Morning News. Apparently he missed Jake Batsell’s piece on Texas gay couples heading to California for licensed marriages, which appeared in yesterday’s paper (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/dmn/stories/060108dnmetgaymarriage.3b218c0.html). at the same time the Houston Chronicle was taking the easy way out by conducting an online poll. There’s something to be said for a hometown newspaper that still conducts interviews, provides context and tells stories that make a difference.

Jon,
It looks to me like you just took a big old cheap shot at The Houston Chronicle. Are you saying we should base judgments about The Morning News’ coverage of gay issues on one article? You’re right about one thing, though — there is something to be said for people who do real journalism.

Apparently, Mr. Wright is not a subscriber to The Dallas Morning News. Were that the case, he would have no doubt observed that, since the California ruling on May 15, The News has had three Page One stories about same-sex marriage, a commentary by gay writers Ian McCann and Brandon Formby in Quick, several news items about Ellen DeGeneres and George Takei deciding to get married to their respective partners, a positive guest editorial, a Section A story about California’s efforts to implement the court’s ruling, an essay about the issue from the editorial board, many letters to the editor and even an essay from conservative commentator Rod Dreher conceding the inevitability of the ruling. I’m not saying anyone should base judgments about The News’ coverage of gay issues on one article. But Mr. Wright would do well to base his judgments on reality.

dear john, please get a life!! i know your work at the DMN must suffer with all the time you take out to bash Dallas Voice. Don’t make me break out my tranny alter ego: Tahitian Noni, cuz that bitch is hot fierceness!!

For the record, there was an “essay” opposing the court’s ruling from the editorial board (Jon, these are sometimes referred to as editorials). There was also a nonsensical column from Dreher implying that homosexuality is immoral. Wait a second, did you just cite Dreher in defense of The DMN’s gay coverage? I rest my case.
