GLBT survival tactics at work

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Gilda’s Club of North Texas bills itself as “cancer support for the whole family,” and it has always broadly defined “family” to encompass the gay community. So it’s no surprise that on Thursday, Gilda’s Club is targeting one of its “Survival Tactics” classes to the GLBT community.

Local attorney Rob Wiley will address work-related issues, including how to address how cancer and other serious illnesses affect you on the job. The seminar takes place at 2710 Oak Lawn Ave. on July 31 (tonight) from 6:30 to 8. Call 214-219-8877 for more information.

Free stuff

If you attended last month’s True Colors Tour, than I bet you also picked up five of those 15 free iTunes downloads passes thinking that they meant you could pick any 15 songs you wanted for free. Well bummer, it’s a pre-selected playlist. But it does actually have some good stuff on it. If you haven’t done so yet, download your fast because the passes expire after today.

Check out the She-Dick doc

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

I think this was the She-Dick documentary that the folks on The Dallas Morning News’ video team were rumored to be assembling. But for some reason, it never made it onto Belo’s Web pages.

Oh well, here it is — filmed by Jon Collins and produced by April Kinser.

Enjoy, because it looks like She-Dick is no longer rocking Dallas’ socks off. Maybe the group will be a big hit  — not in Big D but in the Big Apple. Dan Paul Roberts, aka Candi Shell, is planning on moving to Manhattan this year.

Holy s— !!! ‘Christian man’ takes offense to profanity in hate crime article

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

I had an interesting voicemail the other day from someone who identified himself as Jerry Renault (sp?). Renault called to comment on my article last week about the recent hate crime robbery in Oak Lawn. Renault said he liked the story, and thought it was well-written and contained lot of good information. But then he added that he was deeply offended by my decision to include the anti-gay slurs that were allegedly used by the suspects as they beat the victim. According to court documents, the suspects were yelling things like, “You gay-ass motherfucker, punk-ass bitch.”

“I think it was highly unprofessional and irresponsible for you to actually print these words that these thugs chose to use,” Renault said in the voicemail. “It makes it look as if this article was written by a thug. As a Christian man, I’m highly offended by your article and the way you chose to write it. I know that probably doesn’t make any difference to you, but I just wanted to let you know how highly offended I was by your article.”

Well, at least he’s right about the last part! In case you’re wondering, though, Dallas Voice don’t generally print profanity unless it’s part of a direct quotation and there’s a compelling reason for it. However, I can think of no more compelling reason than to convey the circumstances of an alleged anti-gay hate crime. Besides, what type of right-wing, “family values” newspaper did Renault think he was reading, The Dallas Morning News?

yft-hrc.jpg

In recent days, I have received two seemingly unrelated e-mails that nevertheless got my brain a-thinkin’.

The first was from Youth First Texas, an admirable group that helps gay teens deal with coming out, provides support, etc. Great organization. The e-mail noted that, as a recipient of much-needed funds from the Human Rights Campaign’s Black Tie Dinner, YFT is required to pull its weight in support of the November event. That includes captain-ing at least four tables of 10 seats each (at $300 a plate), and selling at least 25 raffle tickets (at $100 apiece). By my calculations, that puts the burden on YFT to generate $14,500 at a minimum, just to qualify as a recipient of HRC funds.

That in itself doesn’t seem like such a bad deal — after all, Youth First Texas depends on the largesse of the HRC to stay afloat. Small price to pay.

But then there’s the other e-mail I received.

That’s the one that revealed the salaries of top executives on the Human Rights Campaign. At the head of the list is executive director Joe Solmonese, whose compensation is $259,096 — that’s more than a quarter of a million dollars. Indeed, if you add together the total salaries for the seven highest-paid officers, the number is $1,274,989 — a figure eerily close to the $1.27 million that last year’s Dallas Black Tie Dinner generated.

Is everybody cool with this?

The ‘Facts’ are these.

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Well, the girls… er, boys, are finally done. Uptown Players launched a bonus show, “The Facts of Life: The Lost Episode,” inside the Rose Room this year, and going in, everyone associated with it had the same concern: Will theater patrons attend a play in a drag club? The run was supposed to be for three weekends.

But numerous extensions later, it became not just a surprise hit, but the most financially successful show in Uptown Players’ history, according to co-founder Craig Lynch. He promises fans should look forward to another similar bonus show next season, which beginning in February with “Trials and Tribulations of the Trailer Park Housewife” by Del Shores.

For anyone who thinks everyone is OK with gay rights by now…

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Over the weekend in Knoxville, Tenn., a gunman began shooting patrons of a church during a children’s production of “Annie.” The parish was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church, which is known for its liberal views, including support for gay rights — this congregation included.

Now comes word the city’s chief of police says the shooter’s motivation was a hatred for liberals.

Lovely. I’m keeping my office door closed from now on.
