Not to speak ill of the dead, but…

Word today that former Sen. Jesse Helms (R.-N.C.) has died at 86.

I won’t mention that I just dusted off my tap-shoes for top-of-coffin dancing (oops!), but I will point out this is the man who opposed the nomination by Bill Clinton of an openly gay assistant secretary of HUD saying, “I’m not going to put a lesbian in a position like that. if you want to call me a bigot, fine.”

You were a bigot, Jesse. Say “hi” to Jerry Falwell for me.

Happy Fourth, everybody!

  1. Hardy Haberman Says:

Jesse’s passing lifts one more dark cowl from the potential light that is America. That said, I have to wonder how a man so filled with hate as Helms lived so damned long anyway?

That’s an easy one, Hardy. Haven’t you heard Billy Joel? Only the good die young.
