Postcard from Folsom Street Fair

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

obama-sm.jpg

You know it’s a good raunchy party when Christians keep tabs on an outdoor S&M festival, like Americans For Truth just did.

Apparently this “Obama Obey,” above, sign was photographed at last weekend’s Folsom Street Fair.

More on the Palin protest

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Dawn Meifert is organizing a protest against Sarah Palin outside the Fairmont Hotel on Friday, starting around 11 a.m. But apparently some of Gov. Palin’s supporters plan to be there as well.

Here is an e-mail that was forwarded to me:

“Dear Family and friends: Please Read carefully:

Governor Sarah Palin is coming to Dallas next Friday morning for a Noon Luncheon at the Fairmont Hotel- the corner of Ross and Akard Streets- Downtown Dallas. Planned Parenthood, those who advocate the “Gay Lifestyle,” and other “Left-Wing” organizations will be there to protest her arrival at the Fairmont.

We who have worked in the Grassroots for years and many Republicans, Christians- (Protestants and Catholics alike!) will be there also to “stage our Protest of their Protest,” and to welcome Governor Palin ‘Texas-Style.’ Please make Your plans to be there!! ((P.S. Please keep THIS among the Conservative Grassroots organizations as we want the “Left Wing” to be caught by the “Shock and Awe!”

We will begin gathering outside the Hotel no later than 10:30a.m. with Signs, placards, Bullhorns, American and Texas Flags. This Is a Time to “Take our Stand” for the McCain-Palin Republican ticket and we want YOU to be present!! Please mark this date on your Calendar– Friday, October 3rd.

Please Do Your Best in circulating the word and Pass this around to ALL your family and friends! We expect a large gathering of McCain/Palin supporters, and we ARE going to make her feel welcomed to Dallas. We DO plan to “shout down” the opposition as well!! We WILL make some NOISE!!!! So, get out your American and Texas flags and let’s go have some fun!!

Very truly yours,
Charles Lingerfelt, Chairman
Senatorial District 2 - Dallas County Republicans”

Oooops! Sorry Mr. Lingerfelt. Didn’t mean to spoil the suprirse and diminish your shock and awe.

How dare we?!

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

In both the Sept. 19 issue and the Sept. 26 issue of Dallas Voice, I wrote articles about Dawn Miefert and the anti-Sarah Palin protest she is planning outside the Fairmont Hotel in downtown Dallas on Friday. (Read the latest one here.)

Today - that’s Tuesday, Sept. 30 - I started getting e-mails, each beginning with “Dear Tammye and Dawn” and all signed by women,  expressing confusion and outrage that we would stage a protest against Gov. Sarah Palin when she comes to Dallas Friday.

All the letters included some (very minor) variation on this theme: “As I stated previously, I am confused as to why women accept this politically liberal and immoral point of view.  Your protest seems to have no logic, at least none that I can understand. May you experience a change of heart and mind as you ponder thoughts from the suggested information from the above websites.”

And they all included links to Web sites with information on how harmful abortions are to women.

My first instinct was to write back and say, “You have made a mistake. I have nothing to do with organizing the protest. I am simply a reporter reporting on plans by someone in this community to protest against Palin. You are addressing your e-mail to the wrong person.”

Then I quickly realized these are, basically, form letters that some right-wing group has distributed to people - people who probably never read either of my articles - and told them to sign their name and send it on. Responding would do me no good. So it would be easier and just as effective to delete them and move on. I should give them no more thought than the people who supposedly “wrote” them gave in sending them to me.

Then Dawn called. She asked if I had received the e-mails. I said yes. Then she said did you get the one about “God’s sword”? I hadn’t, so she sent it on. I am going to reprint it here after the jump so you can get the full effect.

Just how old IS McCain?

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Repeatedly this morning on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” John McCain described himself as a “Teddy Roosevelt Republican.” But when you’re as old, sallow and confused-looking as McCain is now, doesn’t that just make people ask: “So… he KNEW Teddy Roosevelt personally, right?”

Bad news for CBS’ fact-checking department

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

cbsmorons.jpg

As part of my job, I have to access the media Web sites for TV shows and by far — by far —  the CBS-owned Web sites are incompetent, user-unfriendly, poorly organized and generally frustrating. And now, not even accurate.

While trying to access it this week to get photography for a story (which I wasn’t able to do because … well, nevermind), I came upon the welcome screen above, where CBS is crowing about the ratings success of the season debut of “Survivor” on Thursday.  Only problem is, the dumbasses at CBS DON’T EVEN KNOW THE NAME OF THEIR OWN @#%!* SERIES!!!!

As you can see, they’re pleased about the numbers for “Survivor: Gabon — Garden of Eden.” Only thing is, this season is called “Survivor: Gabon — Earth’s Last Eden,” and has been promoted as such all summer long. So, the suits at CBS don’t watch their own promos. And their incompetence won’t allow me to download a photo of the uber-gay contestant on the series to promote their show… which they don’t know the name of. Worst of all, it’s been several days and the network STILL HAS NOT CORRECTED THE SITE!

Let’s hope their news division isn’t as brain-dead about their facts.

SMU lawsuit reaffirms stereotypes about lesbians and women’s basketball

Friday, September 26th, 2008

rompolarhonda.jpg

In case you missed it, here’s The Dallas Morning News article about lesbian former SMU basketball player Jennifer Colli’s lawsuit against the school and Coach Rhonda Rompola (pictured above). Colli alleges that her scholarship got revoked after she complained that Rompola had made inappropriate comments regarding her sex life and other gay relationships on the team. Interestingly the lawsuit alleges that Rompola herself had “long-term relations” with a female assistant coach. However, the article goes on to say that Rompola married a man last year. So what gives here? Can anyone help me out? Also, you didn’t hear this from me, if you’re looking for a humorous and somewhat offensive comment thread about this story, check Deadspin.

OUT TAKES postponed, lack of volunteer support

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

otdlogo.jpg

Organizers of the OUT TAKES Dallas gay film fest just announced that they are putting the festival off for now. It was originally scheduled for Oct 9-12. According to a press release, some festival departments are struggling to complete their tasks.

On Saturday’s GayBINGO, OUT TAKES hauled in the second largest pot for the 50/50 raffle. But at Sunday’s Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade, the OUT TAKES float entry was canceled due to lack of volunteers.

Y’ALL CAN STILL HELP!

On Saturday, Sept. 27, there’s a Volunteer Round Up at the  Resource Center of Dallas from noon to 3 p.m.  and at JR’s Bar & Grill, from 5  p.m. to 7 p.m.

OUT TAKES foundation president Phillip Archer says, “Our volunteer round up has always been a huge success.  Our focus this time will be to fill slots in our festival organization that are critical to achieving our goals – as opposed to looking for people to actually work taking tickets and ushering at the films.”
