Bears boycott Plano-based Cinemark over CEO’s support for Proposition 8

November 14th, 2008

The San Francisco MovieBears — a Bay Area movie group for bears, cubs and their admirers — is boycotting Plano-based Cinemark Corp. over CEO Alan J. Stock’s support for Proposition 8, the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in California. Stock, a member of the Mormon church, contributed $9,999 to a political action committee supporting Prop 8. Cinemark also operates the Century, CinéArts and Tinseltown Theater chains. San Franisco MovieBears also notes that according to Forbes, Stock’s annual income is $7.9 million, meaning his tithing to the church would be $790,000 per year. The Mormon church has been widely blamed for passage of Prop 8, because it encouraged members to make financial contributions to PACs supporting the ban. All told, Mormons are believed to have contributed $22 million to PACs supporting Prop 8, or 77 percent of the total they raised. According to the San Francisco MovieBears Web site, the group also has chapters in Seattle, London, Cincinnati, Fort Lauderdale, Minneapolis, Washington D.C., Phoenix and Chicago.

“We need to teach corporations that if they want to encourage homophobia and hate in the state of California — or any state — that they can pay for it fiscally across the United States, or in any place that they operate. We need your help to do that,” the San Francisco MovieBears said in an e-mail distributed to members nationwide.

  2. David H. Says:

No thanks, Boycotting a company for the act of one guy is a dumb idea. We need to bring people to our cause not run them off with stupid stunts like this. IMO

  3. Russell Says:

I gotta agree with David on this one. Boycotting the whole company for the CEO’s action is probably not going to accomplish much of anything. Why not go after the big guns who were behind Prop. 8 instead of a peripheral player.

  4. Kia Says:

i heard a rumor that there’s a free screening of Milk at the Angelika on Dec. 4th.

They are going to be serving milk and cookies, should be mayjah!!!

  5. lfivepoints69 Says:

He’s not a random bigot working for the company. He’s the CEO. This boycott should be followed by anyone who cares about protecting marriage and families. Follow the example of Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Mahatma Gandhi; don’t fund the people attacking the constitution and the concept of equality before the law.

  6. Marla Stevens Says:

David H. couldn’t be more wrong. Look at that BOD — these are cronies who put one of their ideological own in that CEO job — the Cinemark company is not your friend. If they were, they’d have donated to an overturn Prop. 8 group to make amends for their CEO and signal that he is not speaking for the company with his donation. They have not. Instead, they’ve put out responses referring to “sexual preference” that signal that they’re on the side of those who would deny us civil marriage equality on the excuse that they believe our sexual orientation to be a choice. (Not that sexual orientation genus should matter when the subject is equal access to a fundamental right, mind you!)

Being good little girls and boys will not save us. War was declared against us long ago and the fight is now on. Either help lead it, follow and help, or get the heck outta the way.
