DALLAS — Since November 4, 2008, tens of thousands of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community members and their supporters have taken to the streets throughout California to show their outrage at the passage of California Proposition 8, which revokes the right of same-sex couples to marry. Similar discriminatory legislation was passed in Arizona , Arkansas , and Florida , and in response the nationwide LGBT community and its supporters are stepping forward to protest the treatment of LGBT Americans as second-class citizens and to fight for equal rights for all Americans. In a statement released on November 4, the No on 8 Campaign declared, “Victory was not ours today. But the struggle for equality is not over.”
On Saturday November 15, Americans of all sexual orientations – members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Queer communities, Trans and Intersex people, and their straight allies – will turn out across America to participate in what could be the largest organized protest movement since the Civil Rights Era. To date, more than 250,000 people have pledged to take part in the nationwide event in front of America ’s city halls, state capitols, and the nation’s Capitol Building to make their voices heard. The protest rally in Dallas will take place from 12:30 PM to 2:00pm at Dallas City Hall at 1500 Marilla Street and speakers will include well respected LGBT community leaders who have provided their support. A national moment of silence will be observed at 11:00am PST/2:00pm EST.

“Stonewall Democrats of Dallas looks forward to addressing the issue of marriage equality this Saturday by peacefully rallying with other LGBT Americans and their allies at Dallas City Hall,” said Jesse Garcia, president of Stonewall Democrats of Dallas. “We hope our show of unity and solidarity with our California brothers and sisters will send a message out to the American public that enough is enough: the hate must stop. We are all Americans and deserve our equal rights.”

“Resource Center of Dallas began 25 years ago with a focus on education and service, and a goal of achieving equality, recognition and equal rights for gays and lesbians in north Texas,” said Mike McKay, Executive Director, Resource Center of Dallas. “That is why we are proud to not only support the “Join the Impact” as our GLBT brothers and sisters across the United States demonstrate against California’s Proposition 8, but also to continuing to fight for our rights here in north central Texas. This is about equality, not theology.”

“We are working closely with local law enforcement to ensure our event is 100% peaceful, incident and arrest free,” said Etta Zamboni, Co-organizer, JoinTheImpact-Dallas. “We just want equal rights.”

United we will stand,

I couldn’t agree more, John. I’ve had several people ask me about time and place today. How difficult can it be?

  2. Carl Smith Says:

I’m a lifelong resident of Dallas and have been openly Gay since 1973. I’ve participated in or been to every Gay Pride Parade Dallas has had. I’ve fought for and seen a lot of change here in Dallas and Texas over the last 35 years. But we have a long, long way to go. I’m encouraged and proud to see the generations behind me getting involved in the Gay Rights movement. Best advice I can give, come out, to your family, friends, coworkers, everyone. Let them see the face of the person they want to discriminate against. Let them see what a wonderful person you are. Let them see your love is just like theirs. Yes, there can be a huge price to pay for coming out, family and friends can shun you, you may not get that advancement at work, but it is their loss, at least you will be able to stand with your head held high and with your pride. Fight a good fight. Keep it up. The generations behind you are depending on you.

[...] related note, Shepard Fairey has made you a very special sumpin-sumpin if you’re planning on protesting in front of City Hall tomorrow. Or First Baptist Church downtown on Sunday. Print and carry, because, face it, that would be a lot [...]

laughs at the title of this… hey, if it works… lmao

Thank you everyone for coming down Nov. 15th (and those who did find City Hall… giggle) to stand united with our brothers, sisters and allies in California and around the nation. Please keep updated on further events, community needs, and news from California on our webpages.
