Offensive prom poster from Minnesota features ‘Dallas County’ jail uniform

April 21st, 2009

We just received via e-mail the above image of what’s being called “a very homophobic and offensive” prom poster spotted by someone in Minnesota. I decided to share the poster here because I couldn’t help but notice that the jail uniform says “Dallas County.” (Don’t we have enough problems with our jails without this bad P.R.?)

Anyhow, the prom poster reportedly was part of a kit put together by a nonprofit called BuzzFreeProm.com. The poster also includes smaller text that isn’t visible but reads, “Tonight, his dance card is going to be full because he chose to drink underage. And instead of celebrating with his class on prom night, he’ll be toasting his new best friends. Play it safe and party smart. Please.”

Tasteless but I can see where the advertising agency thought it was being edgy. Years ago I was asked my opinion on a wildflower center’s ad that featured the line”these flowers aren’t a bunch of pansies”. The agency didn’t understand that it was patently offensive. Straight people suffer from the tyranny of the norm. They figure everyone is like them without even thinking.

Probably not done intentionally, but still offensive.
