San Angelo’s gay former mayor speaks out

May 22nd, 2009

Here’s audio of a 30-minute telephone press conference given Thursday from Mexico by former San Angelo Mayor J.W. Lown, who stepped down on Tuesday to pursue a relationship with a man who’s not a legal U.S. citizen. Lown clearly was closeted as mayor but chose to resign and come out because he fell in love with his partner. I haven’t listened to much of the press conference, but here’s part of the statement made by Lown at the outset:

“In my mind it came to a decision of whether I pursue a promising political career and frankly, you know, sacrifice my humanity, and I just felt I couldn’t make that sacrifice. I had to give this situation the opportunity or I would regret it the rest of my life, and I couldn’t’ serve San Angelo under those conditions.”

Good for him. Sounds like the sort of man we could actually use in politics.

Love and commitment comes with some heartfelt but difficult decisions. We both are so proud of how you are handling your responsibilities AND your true heart feelings. We wish you well in your relationship and hope that you and your partner will be able to return to the US soon. San Angleo should be very proud of you too! Best to you. P & J
