[...] Over in the breaking news feed on the main page, we’ve posted a link to this story from the Associated Press about how the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission rarely punishes its officers for misconduct. The AP found that since 2004, all but 39 of the 234 allegations of excessive force or unprofessional conduct against TABC agents have been closed without disciplinary action. The story also says investigations into such allegations are generally conducted by the agents’ supervisors, which could increase the likelihood of flawed probes. It’s worth noting that the Rainbow Lounge raid is an exception on both counts. TABC’s Rainbow Lounge investigations are being headed by Capt. Andy Pena, who’s over internal affairs, and they’ve already resulted in three employees being terminated. [...]

I'm shocked! This reads more like a wish list (emphasis on WISH) than a report of what actions were taken by a government agency faced with a public outcry. What would we have wished for from TABC? It's all here. And it's all happening. I think our community owes TABC a big thank you for recognizing the seriousness of the problem and taking appropriate concrete action to address the issue. When is the last time the government responded like this to a legitimate concern of ours?

I feel like the kid that woke up on his birthday to find a pony in the yard!

In an unrelated story, a jury hands Singleton a 75 year sentence when prosecutors asked for 60. And now the TABC has handed three bad apples their heads AND made internal changes to fundamentally change the way they relate to our community. If we protest when things go wrong, then we should stand up and recognize TABC leaders when they set things right.

Thank you TABC. You have restored so much of what Aller, Chapman and Parsons took from you. The bottom line is that your agency is going to be a better place than before this fiasco started.
