The Blockbuster Video at 3911 Lemmon Avenue in Oak Lawn (shown above), which opened in 1988, will close for good on Jan. 3, according to store manager Margaret Cole.

The closure appears to be part of Blockbuster’s plan to shutter as many as 960 stores nationwide by the end of 2010, as the Dallas-based company struggles to compete with NetFlix Inc. and Red Box, which you can read about here.

The Lemmon Avenue store was known for its GLBT-interest section, but Cole said as more people begin using the store at Lemmon and McKinney avenues, it will feature more and more gay-related content. She also said all of her employees will be offered positions at other stores.

With the closure imminent, Cole said the 3911 Lemmon location shifted to sales only this past Monday, and all DVDs are discounted, with prices starting at $3.99. The store will continue to receive new inventory until Thanksgiving.

Cole said in addition to the Blockbuster at Lemmon and McKinney, stores near Hillcrest Avenue and Mockingbird Lane, and Inwood Road and Lovers Lane are expected to remain open — at least for now.
