Update on Puerto Rican teen’s murder
November 17th, 2009Carl Smith, one of our regular commenters here on Instant Tea, has tried several times to include, in comments about John Wright’s earlier post about the murder of gay Puerto Rican teen Jorge Steven Lopez, a link. Carl sent the link to me, and I tried to include it, but it still wouldn’t work. So I am putting it here.
This link will take you to Pam’s House Blend blog, which has a Spanish-to-English translation of stories carried in the Puerto Rican newspapers about the murder, including details about the crime, the suspect who has allegedly confessed and what looks like his plans to use the “trans panic defense.”

This story is just heartbreaking and my thoughts are with this young man’s family. I’m very interested in how the Puerto Rican government handles this investigation. Is this the first test of the Mathew Shepard Hate Crimes Act?

Certainly it’s gotten the most coverage since the new law. But if police handle the case properly, nothing from the federal law would kick in. They’ve already arrested someone, so they don’t need federal funds to help in the investigation. And they will certainly prosecute, so again, the feds have no reason to step in.
