New studies: Catholics aren’t homophobic and pedophile priests aren’t gay

The Pope: out of step with the majority of American Catholics?

The Pope: out of step with the majority of American Catholics?

Anti-gay Supreme Court justices Antonin Scalia, John Roberts, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito are Catholic. The Catholic Church poured money into anti-gay campaigns such as Prop 8 and Catholic Charities threatens to stop delivering social services in Washington, D.C. if new anti-discrimination laws including same sex marriage pass.

So you would think Catholics would be more likely to be anti-gay.

A new study finds that is not necessarily true. More Catholics seem to align with Catholic Supreme Court justices Anthony Kennedy and Sonia Sotomayor.

The states with the highest proportion of Catholics are the states that are more likely to support LGBT rights.

According to an article in Pink News, “Six of the eight states where 50 per cent or more of the public supports gay marriage are the states with the highest proportion of Catholics, ranging from Rhode Island at 46 per cent to New York and California at 37 per cent.”

The study was done by Mark Silk from Trinity College.

In a related story, a USA Today headline today says:

Report: Homosexuality no factor in abusive priests

Because most of the 14,000 reported molestations by priests were of boys, the assumption was that gay priests were committing the abuse. A $2 million study commissioned by American bishops indicates that sexual orientation was not a factor in these abuse cases.

Heterosexuals were as likely to have committed these crimes.

In other news, politicians aren’t corrupt. A recent study of the members Congress found that 100% claimed to be perfect little angels.

“There has clearly been a misconception in the public mind about politicians,” the study’s head researcher said. “I hope that this study will affirm in the public mind that politicians are completely trustworthy.”

Praise God that Catholic members are using their hearts to make choices, and not their egos! In God’s last covenant with man, he put all the laws in our “hearts”! God created Gays for God’s reason…curb the overpopulation of the world, bring loving parents to children abandoned by straights…gotta trust in God’s plan. Huge Goliath churches continue to crucify their Gay children, neighbors, family, and friends, just because they were BORN different …and pour obscene amounts of money into stopping them from sharing equal rights. Money which could feed the hungry, clothes the poor, and bring shelter to the needy. Happily, WHAT ONE SOWS, SO SHALL THEY REAP!

Concerned, I’m not sure what your point is. One survey simply show that despite the church’s stance on gay issues, the states with the biggest Catholic populations don’t reflect those views. The other survey finds that even though the bishops were looking for more reasons to kick out gay priests, the straight ones were as likely to be the criminals. No matter which side of the issue you’re on, I find those results interesting.

  4. Josh Says:

If that’s true David – tell them to change their beliefs. Tell them to stop teaching that homosexuality is wrong.

    “Interesting,” isn’t progress.

  5. David Taffet Says:

I’m not sure the Catholic Church cares what I have to say. But apparently, a majority of American Catholics don’t care what the church has to say. And when it comes to LGBT issues, that’s a good thing. And the other study, which was probably conducted to back up their witch hunt for gay priests, backfired. The abuse of children is more likely to come from the straight ones. Oops.

  7. GrrrlRomeo Says:

The Pope and the local US dioceses have been out of touch with American Catholics for a long time. That doesn’t change the fact that Catholics put money in the collection plate and the dioceses dump money into anti-gay campaigns.

Pedophile priests get that way because the church forces them to be celibate. This causes many of them to become sexually dysfunctional. And then they prey on the vulnerable, voiceless LGBT youth in their churches and their homeless shelters. And those LGBT youth are in that position partly because of what the Catholic Church preaches and the anti-gay campaigns they fund.

  8. David Taffet Says:

Grrrl: All of that is true. But the money that the church is using against the LGBT community is coming from a minority of Catholics, if the statistics from this survey is true. The majority of Catholics are on our side, at least in the states where a majority of people support our rights.
