LA Fitness reportedly fires employee who was accused of calling customer a ‘faggot’

November 20th, 2009

An employee at LA Fitness on Mockingbird Lane who was accused of calling a customer a “faggot” has been fired, according to another employee at the gym who spoke to Dallas Voice on condition of anonymity.

Representatives at LA Fitness’ corporate office in California have failed to respond to numerous phone calls seeking comment since the incident was first reported to the newspaper 11 days ago.

Gay LA Fitness customer Jason Evans, 36, alleges that on Sunday, Nov. 8, employee Mark Ramirez twice said to him, “Have a good workout, faggot.” Read Evans’ full account of the incident by going here.

The LA Fitness employee who spoke to Dallas Voice anonymously said Ramirez was fired earlier this week after a thorough investigation. The employee said the company took Evans’ allegation very seriously but also didn’t want to make any rash judgments.

While the case amounted to Evans’ word against Ramirez’s, the investigation determined that even if Ramirez didn’t use the word “faggot,” he treated Evans inappropriately, according to the employee.

The employee said while numerous customers at the heavily gay gym have inquired about the incident, only two have actually cancelled their memberships.

Evans couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

HA HA HA. Jason might be a faggot, but at least he isn’t an unemployed loser.

If that loser did that to me in the gym, I would cause such a scene they would have to haul me out of there.

Don’t take this crap…if an employee calls you a “faggot”, you need to scream and yell and cause such a scene as they have NEVER seen. I would recommend slamming your fist into his face, but don’t get arrested.

We don’t take that shit nowadays.

  2. Mark Cargill Says:

I personally know of several people who have cancelled their membership. You can cancel on line and have to mail in a form. The may not be aware at the local gym how many members have quit.

  3. J. Donaldson Says:

Why are people cancelling their memberships? I could see doing so if the company refused to discipline the employee, but he’s been fired – in other words, they took it seriously enough to terminate his involvement with the company altogether.

  4. Chuck Says:

This is a fine gym. The best I have ever been too and applaud they took action on this one employee. I’m rewarding them with praise and recommendation.

  5. Mark Cargill Says:

They fired the employee several days after they told Jason they believed their employee and told Jason he must be mistaken. They have not contacted Jason to let him know if in fact the employee was fired or why they fired him. This is NOT a “fine” gym! There are other gyms that treat their members much better.

  6. Tom P Says:

Please, this is NOT a “fine gym”. If it were, they would have went out of their way to apologize to Jason.
AND I think Jason should sue their a**es because he paid them to provide him a safe gym, and their very employees, who they have an obligation to investigate before hiring, were the ones that harassed and tried to intimidate him.
No, this gym has not taken NEARLY enough steps to make up for this deed done by THEM! Remember, each of of their employees is a part of the company.

  7. Chuck Says:

    Disagree.

One point on the crummy service graph does not make a trend. One bad apple was removed, case closed. Should the gym get back to the offended patron? Yes, that would be nice.

If we hear of a second offense, yes, that makes a line and I will be highly offended.

We can respond to gay incidences with both a stick and a carrot, not just a stick.

  8. Rachelle Says:

Its a big good lesson for everyone and hopefully they would remember this.
