Mexico City lawmaker proposes legalizing gay marriage

November 25th, 2009

As lawmakers in New York and New Jersey this week put off long-promised votes on legalizing same-sex marriage, Mexico City lawmaker David Razu has proposed changing the city’s civil code to allow gay marriages, according to an Associated Press report.

Razu said the changes he is proposing would give same-sex couples the same rights that opposite-sex married couples have regarding social security and other benefits.

The proposal has been sent to committees for consideration, but no date for a vote has been set.

Mexico is a heavily Roman Catholic country, and the church — of course — opposes Razu’s proposal. But the leftist Democratic Revolutionary Party, which dominates Mexico City’s legislature, has already approved legalizing abortion andcivil unions for same-sex couples.

The church was against those moves, too.

Oh now wouldn’t this be a hoot if the bill passes and it’s still outlawed in Texas…

HaHaHaHa… Gotta love the bible thumpers here in this state.. Wonder how many of those straight “Desperate Husbands” are whoring it up on Cedar Springs right now while their wives are cooking the Turkey for tomorrow?

Maybe not so surprising. A recent survey showed that the states with the largest Catholic populations are the ones that have legalized same sex marriage and other states, like New York or New Jersey, that have not voted to outlaw it. That survey shows that while the church itself opposes civil rights for the LGBT community, Catholics, by a small majority, do not.

While the church funded anti-gay prop 8 and the anti-marriage amendment in Maine, that wasn’t the opinion of the majority of Catholics. What the survey showed is that the church is out of step with its membership, especially in the United States. Maybe that’s true in Mexico as well.

Unfortunately, the Catholic Church is putting its money where its members’ mouths are not. At least according to the survey, a survey commissioned by U.S. bishops for $2 million, whose goal was to prove gay priests are pedophiles. That survey also found that their biggest problem was heterosexual pedophile priests.
