Morning News covers Youth First Texas

November 25th, 2009

YFT

The Dallas Morning News did a wonderful job in its Youth First Texas story this morning. Of course, in the comments, the crazies are out gay bashing a group that first and foremost prevents teen suicide.

The Morning News does a great job of explaining just what the organization does.

“Members help maintain the group’s Web site. Some take dance lessons, while others sing or watch movies,” the paper explains. Scandalous, huh?

Well, you know the crazies. Mention the word gay and they see red. Or pink. Might be worth a comment or two or – as Shelley Koeffler (then with Channel 8 ) once said to me at a demonstration where the right wing was out in force, “We’ll just let the bigots speak for themselves.”

  1. Jack E. Jett Says:

Rational Radio is running PSA’s from Sandra Bernhard, Jim J. Bullock, Belinda Carlisle and Belinda’s son James Mason (who came out at 14). This organization is needed more in this state than just about any other. They will be wrapping gifts to raise money for their group.

Go to their website and check it out.

  2. Disappointed Reader Says:

    Hmm……….Let’s see.

Some commentors there expressed their views (some more strongly than others) in opposition to YFT or “gay” folks in general, yet I find it quite ironic David that as a “journalist” who is supposed to be fair and non-biased by trade, you will quickly label those commentor’s as “crazies” because their oinion may be different than yours. Don’t look now David, but by bashing those people in response to their bashing our community, aren’t you really displaying the same behavior that you claim to denounce ??? Such hypocrisy !!!

Stop trying to stir the pot over there at the DMN, because it appears that your commentary is trying to take an otherwise positive story and make it into some right wing political shouting match………….

Additionally, I find it pretty amazing that the same old names of the same old directors are constantly being interviewed by the media (gee, I wonder who from your circles recommended THEM to be interviewed………) I mean really, don’t you all at the Dallas Voice have anything better to do over there than constantly sensationalizing and glorifying each other in the non-profit director / media circle ??? Its no wonder why the GLBT media is failing miserably…………….

Lastly, with the same old interviewees the public tends to get only part of the story…….Yes, YFT is a great organization that does great things for GLBT youth, however the executive director at RCD never seems to mention that in Dallas, the only people who seem to get help and support via programs are people with AIDS and GLBT youth. She fails to mention about all of the adult GLBT folks living in poverty, many of whom live homeless and are hungry and many because of the socioeconomic disadvantage have to resort to drugs, prostitution and other means in which to survive………Yet where do THEY go for help ???? Are GLBT adults facing similar circumstances any less on the human scale ???? Under the current media hype, the answer is a clear YES !!! If one doesn’t have AIDS, is not a GLBT youth, is an A-list “power” gay or lesbian, a GLBT political activist or who rubs elbows with the non-profit / media circle, they are nobodies.

So my point is while YFT is a good thing and should be advertised, everyone else in the community who doesn’t fit that mold shouldn’t be overshadowed by both that organization and your media overzealous praise for them……… Had the “leaders” in our community been doing things right at the Resource Center, perhaps we would have strong programs in place for our adult GLBT poor and underprivileged, not some offshoot meetings of a few cronies who advertise that their group is helping the greater good.

WAKE UP Dallas Voice and The Resource Center. There is a lot more to our community than just reporting on your friends and the exclusive groups they serve !!

  3. David Taffet Says:

First, what does Resource Center Dallas have to do with it? Youth First Texas is not now and never has been affiliated with the Resource Center.
Second, this is our blog. We post news. We post opinions. We post links to other stories and comment on them. We’re an LGBT newspaper and very much a part of the community.
Interesting that the Morning News has removed the most hateful, bigoted comments that appeared earlier today.

  4. excalibear Says:

Little Miss I Need Attention Troll is back making vile pointless comments I see….

  5. Disappointed Reader Says:

Not surprising as to why they removed those comments David. After all, wasn’t it just a few short weeks ago that John had attacked another writer at the DMN via his article just because that writer had mentioned a phrase that he didn’t agree with ???

So they are probably afraid of more retaliation and public defamation from you all at the Dallas Voice just for expressing their point of view, which is becoming increasingly evident via your recent history of related behavior……..Funny, I don’t recall, you, or John’s or Tammye’s voices as being representative of our ENTIRE community. As the old saying goes “who died and left you all bosses ?? ”

Yes, many do disagree with their point of view, however that does not mean that we in the Dallas GLBT community should jump up and grab a picket sign and take extremist retaliatory measures at the behest of our GLBT “journalists”…………

And just to clarify, yes the Dallas Voice is a GLBT newspaper, but it is only an exclusive GLBT community faction that you three and your non-profit / corporate cronies have created for yourselves. One giant cauldron of political activists and the corporations they grease palms with, who are so arrogant to think that because you all have some media, corporate and political friends, that you are somehow above the law and thus free to retaliate, censor and discriminate at will against those who disagree with you. But then again, since everyone in that circle goes out of their way to kiss Lupe’s ass, I guess the law will turn a blind eye to your little system.

So no David, you three don’t speak for EVERYONE in our community. It is the arrogance, harassment and favoritism that you three depict in your paper which is causing the greater straight community to become tarnished towards ALL GLBT people, thus making it harder for the rest of us out there……..

And as for your comment about RCD having any bearing on the YFT story. Well, if you had read the article in its entirety like a competent “journalist” usually does before commenting, you would have seen clearly that one of the directors of RCD was interviewed, and since all of the GLBT non-profits appear to reside in that little exclusive business clique of theirs, I felt the need to express the correlation.

  6. David Taffet Says:

Disappointed: Please feel free to publish your own paper. And feel free not to read ours. That’s everyone’s right.

  7. Jack E. Jett Says:

    dear dis.

i too am can be a jaded and bitter homo. it can sometimes get the best of you.

however, you may be unaware that david taffet IS the national spokesmodel for all jews and gays. he was elected by a landslide in 1992.

i plan on running against him in the 2012 elections.

the bottom line is that gay teens have it tough in texas and texas youth first is a much needed organization.

  8. James Simmons Says:

Disappointed Reader, I have a request. Don’t read the Voice, don’t comment on the articles, don’t comment on anyone else’s comment(s) and don’t forget to put on clean underwear every morning. If you can do all that, then you’re my new best friend. Provided, of course, that you don’t call me, don’t write me and don’t come visit me. Fair enough?

In all seriousness, you appear to only offer negative comments and criticism and your life appears to focus heavily on negativism. Perhaps seeing a counselor to get to the root of these issues might help you become a happier, more likeable and more positive individual (which incidentally can also improve your help and sense of well being). There are several who advertise in the Voice (no, you can’t comment on their ads, sorry). Or I can refer you to one (or two or three).

  9. David Taffet Says:

Thank you, Jack, and I look forward to the debate before the next election. I promise to do my part to keep it totally irrational and in the gutter.
