Create change by heading to ‘Open Mic at Lucky’s’ Sunday

December 4th, 2009

Perhaps it’s a trend but the spoken word events might be the new buzz. Queerly Speaking has become a monthly event for the Fahari Arts Institute. Now this.

As a benefit for the 22nd National Conference on LGBT Equality: Creating Change, Open Mic at Lucky’s happens this Sunday. Local spoken word artist Amy Weaver hosts the event and Sonya Jevette provides the music. The theme for the night and for the performers is “queering social justice.”  Along with the oratories and live music, they plan on including an art auction. Those visual artists wishing to get it in on the action can email openmiclucky’s@gmail.com.

What’s more, according to the Facebook invite, “if at least 100 people tell their server they are there for the open mic event, Lucky’s will donate half of the purchases!” That’s enough reason to justify getting their”sleaziest, cheesiest, grilled cheese in town” sandwich with fries. Proceeds from the night will go toward scholarships for those needing financial aid to attend the conference.

The conference will be held here in Sheraton downtown Feb. 3–7. The conference addresses building strong and savvy political skills and leadership qualities for the “social justice movement” in the LGBT community.
