Sandra’s spiritual message

Get ready, kids.

La Bernhard is scheduled to play Dallas Market Hall on Oct 18 for the It’s About Life Expo. Here’s a juicy taste of what’s to come. She recently went off on Sarah Palin “a woman who doesn’t believe that other women should have the right to choose, even in cases of rape or incest; a woman whose administration forced the victims of violent crime to pay for their own rape kits.”

Brad Pitt wants gays to do what he hasn’t done yet with Angelina Jolie

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

bradpitt.jpg

I knew there was a reason we gay guys liked Brad Pitt — I mean, other than the obvious (see above).

The notorious breeder — who was married to Jennifer Aniston but divorced her to play house with Angelina Jolie and  a large brood (sans wedding band) — just donated $100,000 to help fight the California initiative that would de-legalize same-sex marriage. (You can read more about it here.)

Maybe he’s hoping that if it’s defeated, he can dump Angie and wed George Clooney in a double ceremony with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (hoping, hoping…)

How I remember Galveston

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

I traveled to Galveston for the first time earlier this year for Mardi Gras and published a story about it in March. The trip was a blast, despite lingering back problems as a result of my riding for hours on a gigantic moving float, tossing beads to the masses. You can read about that trip — including the just re-opened Robert Lafitte’s — here.  It’s how I hope to remember the city despite the pounding delivered by Ike.

Sulu, beaming — and not the “Star Trek” kind of beaming, either

Monday, September 15th, 2008

George Takei, the openly gay actor best known for playing Hikaru Sulu on the original “Star Trek” and six films, wed his longtime partner, Brad Altman, over the weekend. Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols — Ens. Chekov and Lt. Uhura, respectively — served as best man and best lady. Takei, 71, and Altman, 54, were the  first couple to receive a marriage license in West Hollywood on June 17.

Come see me at the library Saturday!

Friday, September 12th, 2008

rope.jpg

For the second year, I helping the Dallas Public Library’s GLBT committee by hosting a series of movie screenings at the downtown J. Erik Jonsson branch every other Saturday of the fall. This year, the theme is “Hollywood’s Closet,” and features classic and older films that have  gay subtext. The series kicks off well with two Hitchcock films: This week, “Rope,” and in two weeks “Strangers on a Train.” Stop by the library’s downstairs auditorium by 2 p.m., Sept. 13, and see a free screening. You can also learn about this year’s Out Takes Dallas gay film festival.

The New York Post predicts that Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson are getting married. Earlier this week, Ronson announced at a DJ gig that Lohan would be her wife by the end of 2008. Now Linds has the ring to prove it.

mammamia.jpg

The stage version of “Mamma Mia!” is running through Sunday at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, but you don’t have to head over to Cowtown to get a taste. Tonight — Thursday, Sept. 11 — the cast is performing a cabaret show to benefit the Starlight Children’s Foundation. The late-night performance takes place at the Round-Up Saloon starting at 11:30 p.m. Merchandise will be auctioned off to raise money for the foundation.

I hope these things don’t run in threes

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Every year, the Dallas-Fort Worth Theater Critics Forum,  a group of stage critics (including me) who cover North Texas theater, get together in early September on a Saturday to meet and bestow our awards on the best of the past season. (You can see the list on the critics’ Facebook page and on here.)

Two years ago, the meeting  ended up being the last official act of Forum member and Dallas Morning News writer Manny Mendoza — he left the paper that week. Now lightning strikes twice: Gay Fort Worth Star-Telegram theater critic Mark Lowry has taken the paper’s buyout; his last day at the paper will be Sept. 19.

I like to think being a Forum member has nothing to do with leaving your newspaper. At least, I’m hoping.

Now THIS is funny

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

This was on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” last week. So happy I could find it on YouTube. It’s a masterstroke (pun intended) of extended political humor. Listen especially to Aasif Mandvi’s insightful anal-ysis (pun intended again!). [youtube]WHf9NHAlBuc[youtube]
