Gilda’s Club of North Texas bills itself as “cancer support for the whole family,” and it has always broadly defined “family” to encompass the gay community. So it’s no surprise that on Thursday, Gilda’s Club is targeting one of its “Survival Tactics” classes to the GLBT community.

In the paper this week, I preview the Fort Worth Opera’s production of “Angels in America,” which opens tonight. But the opera isn’t the only effort Cowtown is making toward drawing attention to the AIDS crisis.

The citywide festival More Life: The Art and Science of AIDS shines a spotlight on the disease through June 8. AIDS Outreach Center, Samaritan House and Tarrant County AIDS Interfaith Network join the FWO and other arts organizations in presenting shows, exhibits and meetings.

Among the events:

• Stage West and Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth team up for a dance/theater collaboration, “Conjuring Light Quilting Life,” choreographed by gay Dallas terpsichorean Loris Beckles. It opens at the Sanders Theatre inside the Fort Worth Community Center tonight (alongside “Angels”). Other performances are May 17 and May 24 3 and 8 p.m., and May 23 at 8 p.m.

• Amphibian Stage Productions presents a staged reading of “Lonely Planet” at the Scott Theatre on May 29 and 30 at 8 p.m.

• “The Faces of AIDS,” a traveling art exhibit, will be at the Community Center through May 31. 

• There will be a town hall meeting May 21 to discuss AIDS.
