Tea Party supporters may try to fashion themselves as Libertarians on social issues, but clearly this is not the case when it comes to same-sex marriage. A New York Times/CBS poll found that Tea Party supporters are 23 percent LESS likely to support same-sex marriage than the general public, and 10 percent MORE likely to oppose all forms of relationship recognition, including civil unions. The poll results also seem to debunk a lot of other myths about the Tea Party movement, The NYT reports. For the breakdown on social issues, go here.
This means that the Tea Party is nothing more than republican religious zealots. Anti-gay, sexist, homophobic, and racist religion is the root cause for opposition to gay marriage, and gay legal equality.
The Tea Party is composed of a bunch of religious sexist, racist, homophobic bigots!
These Teabaggers are the Nazis of our time and surely will try to exterminate gay people like the Jews in concentration camps if they take over America!
I don’t agree with the Tea-Party, but I don’t think they are the epitome of evil as the previous commentors seem to think. The fact is, people who disapprove of gay marriage already control America (including Obama, he supports civil unions instead of gay marriage). I don’t know of any gay extermination concentration camps, but if I’m mistaken, let me know.
Dachau was one. Yeah, we were there too…
Does this really surprise anybody?
The Tea Party members are the most disaffected of those who oppose President Obama’s healthcare plan, which is now the law of the land. They cannot stand the fact that a black President managed to accomplish, in just over one year of extremely hard work, what nobody has been able to accomplish since the days of the New Deal — this is arguably the most far-reaching piece of social legislation ever to have been passed since those days. The Tea Party draws the most extreme and angry of the Republicans – and many of these people hate gay Americans with a passion.
A recent poll shows that, for the first time, more than 50% of Californians now approve of gay marriage. A measure to repeal Proposition 8 will be placed on the ballot in 2012, with the full backing of Equality California (the largest gay rights organization in California). This time, we will succeed in restoring the right to gay marriage.
These people are amongst the most bigoted, intolerant, and cruel of all Americans. They are now determined to attack anything that President Obama supports, and this includes gay rights. President Obama is committed to repeal of the monstrous “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) military policy, which prevents openly gay persons from serving in the Armed Forced of the nation, regardless of how exemplary their records may be. This obscene policy literally requires that gay servicemembers lie about themselves if asked about their sexual orientation, on pain of “separation” from the Armed Forces, often on less than honourable grounds. America remains the only Western democracy so morally backward and so obtuse at to maintain this ban – other nations (including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and most European nations) struck down their prohibitions against openly gay persons serving in their armed forces many years ago. So Tea Party members will, predictably, oppose efforts to repeal DADT (these efforts are already underway).
Similarly, these people will oppose civil partnerships and gay marriage, because President Obama supports civil partnerships, and although he has stated that he does not believe in gay marriage, he is committed to repealing the monstrous “Defense of Marriage Act” (DOMA), the effects of which are to prohibit the federal government from recognizing the validity of gay marriages (thereby depriving gay married couples of about 1,138 federal rights, protections, and benefits routinely granted to heterosexual married couples), and to allow those states which do not recognize gay marriage to not recognize the validity of gay marriages entered into in those jurisdictions where such marriages may be legally solemnized. Because President Obama wishes to repeal the DOMA (which will pave the way for the recognition of gay marriage throughout the land), his detractors (including Tea Party members) will automatically be hostile to gay marriage and to civil partnerships.
What this reveals is that the Tea Party is attracting the angriest and most intolerant members of the hard right, particularly with respect to social issues. This plays out in these sickening observations.
The solution, of course, is to repeal the DOMA and to repeal the DADT policy as soon as possible, and to introduce the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which should pass both Houses of Congress with ease – and to do this as soon as possible, before this party obtains any real political clout.
PHILIP CHANDLER
Actually Obama approves of Gay Marriage, at least he did 10 years ago. He just says he doesn’t now to stay in office!
I attended a big Tea Party event today and will confirm: THEY ARE NOT LIBERTARIAN. They are big government conservatives. The crowd I saw hated Obama and immigrants. They were more against Obama the man than against his policies. When Bush pushed the same BS policies the Tea Party movement was quite. Only when Obama did the same thing did they get upset.
There is nothing libertarian about the Tea Party that I saw today.
thomasAlex……..Even though gay rights is an important issue I highly doubt that O’s stance on it is keeping him in office!
You need to read today’s headlines as he has extended “immediate family” rights to now include our gay counterparts.
I would like to read some civility in these responses, but all I read is uncontrolled hateful venom on the part of the gay community. Any logical person sees right thru the foul language and will want no part with it, which only defeats your cause.
How come so many of the supposed “small government” protesters want an expanded government to control the every day lifes of others?
“I would like to read some civility in these responses.”
I am sorry, but you can’t expect “civility” when you treat other familys like animals. Some basic level of humanity is expected before you converse with humans.
John, I’d like to read an expanded article from you on the same topic in a future edition. Thank you for the information.
