Closing arguments in the penalty phase of Bobby Singleton’s trial are now complete, and the jury is deliberating again. During closing arguments, Singleton’s attorney said anything more than 20 years would be “highly inappropriate.” But the prosecutor told the jury that if they sentenced Singleton to only 20 years, they would be the “laughing stock” of the Texas criminal justice system. The prosecutor said Singleton should be sentenced to at least 60 years, which would be twice as much prison time as his co-defendant, Jonathan Gunter.
