I couldn’t agree more with Carl and Rob. It’s been over 40 years since Stonewall, and the attitude of local “leaders” in our community leaves me cold. First you have all gay ex-councilment endorsing the Republican canidate for mayor, and now you have an column telling us to watch ourselves. It has been 40 years since Stonewall. We do not have to “set a good example” to get our full civil rights, they are past-due!!!

Excuse me, but if I understand correctly, a straight marine called a gay man a “faggot” and slammed his face into a bar, cutting his nose with a glass. Regardless of what may or may not have provoked the attac, what about this incident is not a hate crime, ? Had the marine, used the “N” word and slammed an African-American man’s face into the bar, it would have been a hate crime from the onset. We have lived under a double standard for way too long. Civil rights are civli rights.

There is NO acceptable excuse to assault another person, and I know that is not what you are saying, but If a straight chick flirted with me in a gay environment, I couldn’t slam her face into a table and expect everyone to be okay with it. I’m sorry, but my opinion is, you assault someone, you pay the price. Actually, I’m not sorry that is my opinion. Being flirted with is a compliment to your good looks or attractiveness, not a crime. Flirting is not correct in many many circumstances, but no reason to get assaulted for.
