At the same recent convention where conservative pundit Ann Coulter uttered her infamous “faggot” remark, she helped to honor a gay former porn actor.

Marine Cpl. Matt Sanchez, 36, received an award at the Conservative Political Action Conference on March 2 in Washington for speaking out against the anti-Iraq war atmosphere at Columbia University, where he is a junior.
Sanchez’ actions also had led to appearances on “The O’Reilly Factor” and “Hannity and Colmes.”

But after someone recognized him in a photograph with Coulter at the convention, Sanchez admitted March 8 to having appeared in gay porn films like “Donkey Dick,” “Jawbreaker” and “Glory Hole of Fame 3.”

“I won’t deny that I acted in several adult movies 15 years ago under names like Pierre LaBranche and Rod Majors,” he wrote on his Weblog.

The news was met with mixed reaction.

Some conservatives expressed support for Sanchez, a self-proclaimed right-winger, despite his past, while liberals like The Nation’s Max Blumenthal blasted him.

“It doesn’t matter, inherently, that he was a gay porn star,” Blumenthal told MSNBC. “What matters is that he’s a hypocrite who’s advancing the ideological homophobia of the right and helping them exploit this homophobia for political gain.”

Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, disagreed.

“I don’t see any hypocrisy in Matt Sanchez’s actions,” Foreman told the Advocate. “As is his right, he spoke out against what he believed was bad treatment by Columbia’s “‘radical anti-military students.’ “

The only hypocrisy, Foreman said, lies in the military’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and in conservatives “who lift a man to hero and spokesperson status until gasp! he is found out to be a “‘faggot.’”

Sanchez, meanwhile, said he wouldn’t have used that word in public.

“I don’t agree with what she [Coulter] said, but anyone in the military would defend her right to say it,” he wrote.
