The Catholic church was suspiciously silent during the holocaust, and their strong support for the Franco dictatorship is why Spain is now such a bastion of gay rights. In this country, Catholics range from the poorest people who see the Virgin Mary in a tree, to the most liberal of the Massachusetts elite. They have vastly different priorities and world views.
