Check out this neat little search engine over on The San Francisco Chronicle’s Web site. It allows you to search by name, city and state to see who’s given money to groups supporting and opposing the same-sex marriage ban in California. I typed in “Dallas, TX” this morning and discovered that someone named Rachel Weidman contributed $50,000 to a group supporting the ban on Oct. 29. I believe this makes Ms. Weidman the top donor to either side from Dallas. I’d never heard of Weidman before, but not surprisingly it looks as though she is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. LDS church members, or Mormons, now account for more than $20 million in contributions to groups supporting the marriage ban. Rachel Weidman’s occupation is listed as “none,” but it looks as though her husband is David Weidman, CEO of Celanese Corp., a huge chemical company based in Dallas. According to Forbes, David Weidman’s annual salary is $2.97 million.

UPDATE: The largest single Texas contribution came from Austin-based Apple Inc., which gave $100,000 to a group opposing the ban. However, Weidman is tied for the largest contribution from Texas to a group supporting the ban.
