Oak Lawn crime stats through April 22

Courtesy of Lt. Thon Overstreet, above are crime stats through April 22 for the Dallas Police Department’s 540s sector, which encompasses most of Oak Lawn and is shown in orange on the map below. The stats show year-to-date 2009 numbers in the first column, followed by 2008 numbers for the same period in the second column, and the percent change in the third column. As you can tell, overall crime is down 14 percent, and the only two categories of offenses to see increases are shoplifting and motor-vehicle burglaries (BMVs).

So, as I read the stats, there are an average of 3.4 cars burglarized every week. Message to those visiting the gayborhood: Be sensible. Criminals seldom break into a car if they are unsure of the rewards. An item left on the seat is an obvious reward. While there are certain areas so bad that criminals will pop the trunk just to look, if there is nothing obvious to be gained, most will keep on looking until they find another car where there is something obvious to steal. “Out of sight, out of mind” is the most effective deterrent.
