Another reason to celebrate Thursday's ruling: It pissed Cornyn off

Texas Sen. John Cornyn is none too happy about Thursday’s ruling by the California Supreme Court striking down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage. In Cornyn’s view, the ruling means it’s time to start talking again about amending the U.S. Constitution to ban gay marriage. Cornyn said the fact that gay marriage was isolated to just Massachusetts was used as an argument against a proposed federal amendment in 2006.

Then again, maybe Cornyn is just nervous that his Democratic challenger in this year’s election, Rick Noriega, is polling within just a few percentage points of him. Cornyn may think this is a perfect opportunity to fire up his right-wing supporters, and who better to give him the opportunity than The Dallas Morning News? Did The DMN bother contacting Noriega to see what he thinks about the ruling? Stupid question.

Here’s a better question: When is the Human Rights Campaign going to endorse Noriega? I understand HRC doesn’t want to waste its members’ money on losing candidates, but I think it’s fair to say Noriega has a reasonable shot at winning, and Cornyn is about as anti-gay as they come. Plus, Noriega currently has a huge fundraising disadvantage.
