In response to my story about the sheriff’s department last week, Dallas County District Clerk Gary Fitzsimmons informed me yesterday that he’ll be adding gender identity to the employment nondiscrimination policies for his department effective in June. Fitzsimmons also says his department, which has about 275 employees, was the first in the county to add sexual orientation to its nondiscrimination policies, after he took office in 2007. Since then, the District Attorney’s Office has also added sexual orientation, and the sheriff’s department has now added both sexual orientation and gender identity.
