 Living in West Texas I don't think it would have been a very good idea. These days I think it would be more tolerable in WTX, but still frowned upon.

 Even if the school had allowed it, in 1966 my first prom, I could still have been arrested, imprisoned and classified as mentally ill. Even worse, I would have been kicked off the football team and really missed all those showers after practice.

 It was a very different time in 1978, in the Midwest. Growing up in rural Nebraska, you got beat up weekly if anyone remotely thought of you as gay, or queer. People still thought of us as "contagious".
